About

Impact Hood River

Impact Hood River began a new chapter in August 2020 when Ryan Brock took ownership of the academy. With a vision to create a thriving community, Ryan navigated the challenges of the pandemic, determined to make the academy a cornerstone of health, growth, and connection.

Starting from zero members at the time of purchase, Ryan's dedication and leadership helped transform Impact Hood River into a vibrant space for training and learning. The academy now boasts a growing membership of over 100 individuals and has expanded into an impressive 4,000+ square feet of space.

At Impact Hood River, we take pride in fostering a supportive environment where members of all ages and skill levels can thrive. Our mission is to build a community rooted in strength, discipline, and camaraderie, helping each person reach their fullest potential.

COACHES

MEET OUR TEAM

Ryan Brock

Owner/Head Coach

Ryan’s Jiu Jitsu journey began in 2012 at Gladiators Academy of Lafayette, training under Tim Credeur and Josh Artigue. After moving around a bit, he found his home in beautiful Hood River, OR. Here, under the Impact Jiu Jitsu banner, he took over the local academy and earned his black belt. When he’s not on the mats, you’ll find Ryan exploring the endless outdoor adventures the Columbia River Gorge has to offer!

Molly Beard

Youth & Adult BJJ Coach

Molly has been a teacher for nearly her whole life. She began working with children as a teenager, and continued into a long career teaching and coaching climbers of all ages for nearly 30 years. So it makes sense that once bitten by the BJJ bug in 2017 that teaching would again be in her future. She loves Mexican cuisine, Hello Kitty, and chainsaws almost as much as she loves BJJ and climbing.

Gabe Burgess

Adult Coach

Scott Weaver

Adult BJJ Coach

With over a decade of experience training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Scott is passionate about helping students grow in skill, confidence, and creativity on the mats. He believes Jiu-Jitsu is more than a sport—it’s a way to challenge yourself, adapt and persevere through any of life's problems, and to have fun along the way. When he’s not on the mats, he’s out chasing adventure with his family—paddling down rivers, trekking through mountains, and embracing the wild just like he does on the mats.

Adam Spillman

Adult BJJ Coach

Adam is a certified performance breathing & mental skills coach. His journey began 5 years ago with a terminal cancer diagnosis. Since then Adam has been coaching others to reach their full potential, and optimize their health and wellbeing. Adam has been training Jiu Jitsu since 2021, and grew up wrestling. He has a passion for physical activity, and connecting others to their mind-body connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BJJ? What is Jiu Jitsu? How are they different?

Let's start with the last of the three questions above - They are not different. They are two ways of referring to the same sport/martial art!

Now for the meat and potatoes of the discussion. What is Jiu Jitsu/BJJ? - Jiu Jitsu is a martial art/combat sport that focuses specifically on submission grappling (wrestling until you make the other person quit by tapping out (submitting them)). It emphasizes leverage and technique, making it possible for smaller individuals to defend against and potentially overcome larger opponents (size still matters, but good technique can overcome size in certain cases!). Jiu Jitsu promotes mental discipline, physical fitness, and strategic problem-solving through controlled sparring (referred to as rolling) and competition.

Is Jiu Jitsu Dangerous?

While Jiu Jitsu, like any physical activity, carries some inherent risks, it’s far less dangerous than you might think! Our classes are designed to prioritize safety with proper techniques, trained instructors, and a supportive environment. Injuries are rare, and when they do happen, they’re typically minor. Plus, with a focus on control and technique, you'll quickly learn how to stay safe while having fun. So, don’t worry—just tap in and leave the worries at the door!

What is a Submission?

A submission in Jiu Jitsu is a technique used to force an opponent to concede defeat by applying either a breaking pressure to joints, or by restricting their breathing or blood flow through chokes. Submissions are a fundamental aspect of Jiu Jitsu, emphasizing control and technique over brute force.

What do I wear?

We offer two types of classes here at Impact Hood River:

Gi Classes:

  • In these classes you wear a Gi (traditionally referred to as a Kimono). This is the same whether you are a man or woman.

  • New to Jiu Jitsu and don't have a Gi? NO WORRIES! We have loaners for your free trial and you get a free one to take home with you if you sign up!

NoGi Classes:

  • Men - Typically wear shorts and a rashguard. Sometimes spats will go under their shorts (we require men to wear shorts over spats here)

  • Women - Typically wear either leggings and a rash guard, or leggings and shorts with a rash guard same as men!

Do I need to be in good shape to start Jiu Jitsu?

Is Jiu Jitsu good for self defense?
