Founded in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, Impact Hood River was built from the ground up to bring people together through the art of Jiu Jitsu. What began as a small group of dedicated practitioners has grown into a thriving community of over 100 members — kids, adults, hobbyists, and competitors — all united by a shared commitment to growth, fitness, and connection.
At Impact Hood River, we believe martial arts should build more than just physical skill — it should strengthen confidence, discipline, and community. Our academy offers Jiu Jitsu and martial arts classes for kids and adults of all experience levels, serving Hood River and the surrounding Columbia River Gorge area. Whether you’re stepping onto the mats for the first time or preparing for your next competition, you’ll find expert instruction, encouragement, and a team that pushes you to be your best.
Head instructor Ryan Brock, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Professor Michael Chapman, has been training for over 13 years and teaching for more than six. His approach blends technical precision with an emphasis on mindset, resilience, and camaraderie — helping students challenge themselves in a positive, uplifting environment.
Our culture is friendly, competitive, and family-oriented, where every class is a chance to improve, have fun, and connect with people who genuinely care. From young kids learning focus and respect to adults building fitness and confidence, Impact Hood River is where lasting growth begins — on and off the mats.

COACHES

Ryan’s Jiu Jitsu journey began in 2012 at Gladiators Academy of Lafayette, training under Tim Credeur and Josh Artigue. After moving around a bit, he found his home in beautiful Hood River, OR. Here, under the Impact Jiu Jitsu banner, he took over the local academy and earned his black belt. When he’s not on the mats, you’ll find Ryan exploring the endless outdoor adventures the Columbia River Gorge has to offer!

Molly has been a teacher for nearly her whole life. She began working with children as a teenager, and continued into a long career teaching and coaching climbers of all ages for nearly 30 years. So it makes sense that once bitten by the BJJ bug in 2017 that teaching would again be in her future. She loves Mexican cuisine, Hello Kitty, and chainsaws almost as much as she loves BJJ and climbing.

Adult Coach
Gabe is a Columbia Gorge local with a background in aviation and a passion for Jiu-Jitsu. Growing up, he was always drawn to adventure, spending much of his time chasing wind, snow, dirt, and surf. He brings that same energy to the mats, focusing on technical precision and problem-solving to help students build confidence and skill while he develops "an over 50 game". When not training or coaching, he enjoys exploring the world with his wife and trying to keep up with his two daughters.

With over a decade of experience training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Scott is passionate about helping students grow in skill, confidence, and creativity on the mats. He believes Jiu-Jitsu is more than a sport—it’s a way to challenge yourself, adapt and persevere through any of life's problems, and to have fun along the way. When he’s not on the mats, he’s out chasing adventure with his family—paddling down rivers, trekking through mountains, and embracing the wild just like he does on the mats.

Adam is a certified performance breathing & mental skills coach. His journey began 5 years ago with a terminal cancer diagnosis. Since then Adam has been coaching others to reach their full potential, and optimize their health and wellbeing. Adam has been training Jiu Jitsu since 2021, and grew up wrestling. He has a passion for physical activity, and connecting others to their mind-body connection.
Let's start with the last of the three questions above - They are not different. They are two ways of referring to the same sport/martial art!
Now for the meat and potatoes of the discussion. What is Jiu Jitsu/BJJ? - Jiu Jitsu is a martial art/combat sport that focuses specifically on submission grappling (wrestling until you make the other person quit by tapping out (submitting them)). It emphasizes leverage and technique, making it possible for smaller individuals to defend against and potentially overcome larger opponents (size still matters, but good technique can overcome size in certain cases!). Jiu Jitsu promotes mental discipline, physical fitness, and strategic problem-solving through controlled sparring (referred to as rolling) and competition.

While Jiu Jitsu, like any physical activity, carries some inherent risks, it’s far less dangerous than you might think! Our classes are designed to prioritize safety with proper techniques, trained instructors, and a supportive environment. Injuries are rare, and when they do happen, they’re typically minor. Plus, with a focus on control and technique, you'll quickly learn how to stay safe while having fun. So, don’t worry—just tap in and leave the worries at the door!

A submission in Jiu Jitsu is a technique used to force an opponent to concede defeat by applying either a breaking pressure to joints, or by restricting their breathing or blood flow through chokes. Submissions are a fundamental aspect of Jiu Jitsu, emphasizing control and technique over brute force.

We offer two types of classes here at Impact Hood River:
Gi Classes:
In these classes you wear a Gi (traditionally referred to as a Kimono). This is the same whether you are a man or woman.
New to Jiu Jitsu and don't have a Gi? NO WORRIES! We have loaners for your free trial and you get a free one to take home with you if you sign up!
NoGi Classes:
Men - Typically wear shorts and a rashguard. Sometimes spats will go under their shorts (we require men to wear shorts over spats here)
Women - Typically wear either leggings and a rash guard, or leggings and shorts with a rash guard same as men!

Absolutely not! Jiu Jitsu is a martial art for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. Whether you're in your 20s, 40s, or beyond, you'll find that Jiu Jitsu is adaptable to your body and pace. Many of our members start later in life and thrive in a welcoming and supportive environment. The key is consistency, patience, and a willingness to learn. So, don’t let age hold you back—come join us and see how Jiu Jitsu can be a rewarding experience at any stage in life!

Not at all! Jiu Jitsu is for everyone, and you don’t need to be in top physical shape to start. The practice itself will help you improve your strength, endurance, and flexibility over time. It’s all about progress at your own pace.

Yes! Jiu Jitsu is widely regarded as one of the most effective martial arts for self-defense, particularly in real-life situations where you're taken to the ground. It focuses on leverage, control, and technique, allowing you to defend yourself even against larger opponents.
