Ryan's Journey
Before and After
2019 Ryan 170lb, weaker (with Bull Elk ~700lb)
2024 Ryan 220lb, stronger
The Mammoth Strength Training model focuses on objective performance improvement in the gym and on the mats or in the field, but visible body changes and aesthetics commonly follow training. Whether it’s lean mass weight gain, recomposition (lean and fat mass changes), overall weight loss, and inches lost off the waist (or gained in the chest and butt) expect positive results. Getting enough quality nutrition is a basic tenant of the linear progression and nutrition guidance is available for all clients.

Mammoth Strength Training is based on the first principles of Progressive Overload, Stress-Recovery-Adaptation, Biomechanics, and Training/Programming (engaging in random exercise is the opposite of programming). Strength is easily defined and measured. It’s our ability to produce force against an external resistance, as measured in pounds over a distance moved. By increasing our force production capacity during basic human movement patterns (see below) we get definitively stronger from a general/global sense. Training general strength is the baseline for all physical attributes barring conditioning/cardio (agility, mobility, power, balance, etc). Barbells are the most accommodating and scalable instrument to progress this human strength. Developing the body in this manner also serves to train the mind to do things that are hard.
The core movements are the squat, the deadlift, the press, the bench press, the chin up, and the power clean and snatch. Although the lifter progresses to a more specific and complex program as they mature, returning back to the core movements and maintaining first principles is key. Simplicity can be a beautiful thing but eventually complexity comes on board and things get ugly, and then simple again.
Bridging the gap between an acute injury or illness and returning to a rigorous meaningful life has been a common experience as a coach in the Starting Strength world. We are lucky to work with fantastic healthcare professionals that are also strength coaches in the Starting Strength network.
We have had clients with frozen shoulders, knee replacements, digestive disorders, shoulder surgeries, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, osteoporosis/-penia, sarcopenia (muscle wasting), and most with some form of non-specific back pain. All ages of all athletic backgrounds benefit from precision loaded strength training over time.
